I’ve been thinking a lot about color lately. If I had to choose between color or black and white photography for the rest of my life, I’d probably pick black and white. There is something soulful about it. It’s frank and to the point and I appreciate that. Add in some high contrast and graphic shapes or strong lines, and I’m sold.
I love to photograph my life in black and white, and as I usually shoot jpeg, there’s no converting to color in post. Maybe I see the image I want to make more accurately with the distraction of color removed. Or maybe black and white is the lazy approach – less to worry about? Or maybe I simply lack the skill to wade through the potential chaos of color and pick out the jewel in the midst of it. Regardless, it’s evident to me that further growth awaits me.
There’s nothing really chaotic about a still subject, but we’ll call this a beginning.
